Shannon Newlin the Artist

Hi Friends,
It is my pleasure to introduce you to my new friend and artist, Shannon Newlin.
In July I attended a local artists series at West Elm, Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a rare occasion where I had no parental duties and I wanted to hang out with friends and see some art. I walked into West Elm and was completely blown away by the color and mood of her paintings and illustrations.

I was super excited to meet with Shannon and learn more about her and her art. My first impression about Shannon is that she is humble and talented. What struck me was how clear Shannon’s point of view is and what makes it even more amazing is that she started painting as a profession last November. We chit-chatted at West Elm and made plan to meet at a future date. I could not leave without bringing some of her work with me.

This fantastic illustration above is now hanging in my living room.

Fast-forward a couple of weeks.

I had the opportunity to meet with Shannon for coffee and learn more about her and how she started.

Before having children she worked in graphic design and product development. Once she become a mom she decided to stay at home with her two children. Now that her children are a little older with manageable schedules she has leaped into the art business…and I mean leaped.

I am an artist and have been surrounded by artists most of my life. Shannon has the rare combination of artistic skills and a savvy business sense that I rarely see. Her goal is not only sell her art to the public, but to make it commercially viable. Shannon approached her new venture by taking a e-course on art licensing by Lilla Rogers. I think that this is a very clever idea and am looking into taking one of her classes as well. She also sought instruction from world-renowned artist, Andy Braitman. In the beginning of 2014 she opened Shannon Newlin LLC and was ready to sell her art. Shannon said that obtaining a LLC was a great motivator to “put herself out there”. She also said that the first confirmation that she was heading in the right direction was the feedback and success of her booth in Vintage Charlotte.

Shannon creates these beautiful pieces in a studio in her home. Her children also have a designated table in her studio where they also can create art.

Shannon Newlin is a talented artist and an inspiration to artists like myself. To learn more, visit her website and Instagram account.
