IPhone Headshots

Hi Friends, I was in a bind this week. I am going to start writing for the Charlotte Moms Blog, a community blog for my hometown. I am super excited and I will tell you more about it later.. promise. Anyways, I needed to submit a photo of myself. I need new photos anyway and ones where I don’t look like a goofball. I am super lucky to know and have a lot of great photographers as friends. However, I did not have a lot of time and did not feel comfortable asking for a favor on such sort notice. So, I enlisted the help of my friend, Sue, who will also be a contributor to Charlotte Moms Blog. Sue and I are not photographers and we don’t even have cameras. Did we let that stop us, heck no.

I shoot all my blog photos from my iPhone… crazy huh? I actually took class at the Makers Summit this past spring on how to take iPhone photographs. This is where I met my best app friend, VSCO.This is a free app that you can download on your phone. VSCO really is a great camera with fantastic editing tools. I have tried many photo apps, but this is the best.

We lucked out with the weather for our DIY Head-shot photo shoot. It was an overcast day with great lighting outside. I don’t have fantastic lighting inside my home, so outdoors as really our only option.

My next step was to go through my favorite blogs, sites and online stores and look at head-shots of the authors, owners and creates.

There is the looking down (I did this with Paper and Fox), looking to the side, looking straight, but the most flattering is looking up.

I took this photograph of Sue when she was sitting on a chair in my yard and I was standing on a chair above her. Isn’t she pretty.

Our next location was in my car port. I take a lot of photographs in my car port because the lighting is really nice. I also like the texture of the white bricks.

We stuck with the slight look-up pose for most of the photographs. So, I feel like we got some really pretty and natural shots.

After we were satisfied with the images, I open the images in Pic Monkey. This is a free Photo Editor and Graphic design program that is freaking fantastic. You can simply open the program in your browser and start editing, no downloading necessary. I have upgraded to the Royal Pic Monkey editor and it only cost $33.00. With the upgrade you get more editing, design, collage options, but the free version works just fine.

I am not going to pretend that these images are on the same level as professional photographs, but Sue looks beautiful and natural.

One day I will get a “real”camera, but for right now I will keep using my phone.

Here are some of the photos that Sue took of me. She did a really nice job.

    Carmody-
Thanks for the tip on the app - I am downloading it now. And I am headed to a lunch and learn on how to take better iphone pics for your website. Woo hoo! I have a real camera but it seems to be acting up and doesn’t want to focus at certain ranges or angles. What I am having a problem with is the balance between “good” photos and them being too staged. First I don’t have good staging equipment, second I don’t want to stop in the middle of a task and stage a photo but lastly, and most importantly, I don’t want women to think that everyone’s house (food, etc) looks like the stuff we see on Pinterest and in magazines. So there is a balance to strike that I haven’t found yet. Thoughts?

      Stacy,
The difference between “good” images and images that are too staged is really subjective. I think practice makes perfect. For me, the less going on on the background helps the the overall look. Also, keep in mind that I am not a professional… and am learning with each photo that I take.

I went to the phone photo class. He recommended pixlr express (free app) if you are interested in trying that too. I’ve taken a few shots with it and the editing is super simple and has made my iphone photos look better for sure. I have a lot more to discover on it though.

Oh and by staged I mean things like making things look unrealistic not clearing out the clutter in the photo - that definitely makes a better shot.

Thanks for the great tips for creating a quality headshot using my iPhone! Just thought it would be worth sharing that I have an iOS app called MyHeadshots (http://www.myfbtools.com/myheadshots) designed to help actors and other professionals format headshots (and resumes) for auditions and casting calls. Your helpful hints work hand in hand with my app to produce very nice print-ready results for amateurs and pros alike.

Thanks again for the very useful post!

Your app looks awesome Bryon. I will have to try it out!
