Hi Friends, I was in a bind this week. I am going to start writing for the Charlotte Moms Blog, a community blog for my hometown. I am super excited and I will tell you more about it later.. promise. Anyways, I needed to submit a photo of myself. I need new photos anyway and ones where I don’t look like a goofball. I am super lucky to know and have a lot of great photographers as friends. However, I did not have a lot of time and did not feel comfortable asking for a favor on such sort notice. So, I enlisted the help of my friend, Sue, who will also be a contributor to Charlotte Moms Blog. Sue and I are not photographers and we don’t even have cameras. Did we let that stop us, heck no.

I shoot all my blog photos from my iPhone… crazy huh? I actually took class at the Makers Summit this past spring on how to take iPhone photographs. This is where I met my best app friend, VSCO.This is a free app that you can download on your phone. VSCO really is a great camera with fantastic editing tools. I have tried many photo apps, but this is the best.

IPhone Headshots

We lucked out with the weather for our DIY Head-shot photo shoot. It was an overcast day with great lighting outside. I don’t have fantastic lighting inside my home, so outdoors as really our only option.

My next step was to go through my favorite blogs, sites and online stores and look at head-shots of the authors, owners and creates.

There is the looking down (I did this with Paper and Fox), looking to the side, looking straight, but the most flattering is looking up.

I took this photograph of Sue when she was sitting on a chair in my yard and I was standing on a chair above her. Isn’t she pretty.

Our next location was in my car port. I take a lot of photographs in my car port because the lighting is really nice. I also like the texture of the white bricks.

We stuck with the slight look-up pose for most of the photographs. So, I feel like we got some really pretty and natural shots.

After we were satisfied with the images, I open the images in Pic Monkey. This is a free Photo Editor and Graphic design program that is freaking fantastic. You can simply open the program in your browser and start editing, no downloading necessary. I have upgraded to the Royal Pic Monkey editor and it only cost $33.00. With the upgrade you get more editing, design, collage options, but the free version works just fine.

I am not going to pretend that these images are on the same level as professional photographs, but Sue looks beautiful and natural.

One day I will get a “real”camera, but for right now I will keep using my phone.
