Rope Drapery Tiebacks - Restoration Hardware Inspired

Howdy!

So, since I painted my fireplace, I have been really motivated to continue redoing the rest of the living room. I purchased these curtains from Target.

I was more than pleased when they arrived. Now, I needed a solution to act as a curtain tie back. After drooling over Restoration Hardware catalogs I fell in love with these:

So they are perfect with the rope, nautical, rustic yet modern look. Then I saw the price.

Item #: 12180042 VNCK
Size: 1″
Quantity: 4
Price (each): $70.00 Special $56.00
Total: $224.00

So…. not an option.

I visited Home Depot and had two different sizes of rope cut. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will call the small rope the “skinny” rope and the larger rope the “fat” rope. The skinny rope was less than a $0.25 a foot and the fat rope was a little over a$1.00 a foot. I picked up 15 feet of both ropes.

I also purchased 4 of these cup hooks.

DIY Tiebacks

I cut all the fat rope into my desired length for a tieback ( almost 2 feet). I singed all the rope ends with a lighter to prevent fraying. I cut smaller pieces of the skinny rope, then I pinched the skinny rope in half and hot glued it to the ends of the fat rope.

I cut about a foot of the skinny rope and wrapped it around where I hot glue the pinched skinny rope to the fat rope. I secured the wrapped rope with hot glue. I repeated this process 4 times. I spray-painted the cup hooks a flat gray.

I had rope left over and probably spent less than $20 on all 4 Rope Drapery Tiebacks.

My tiebacks do not have the cool metal hardware like the RH tiebacks, but they still turned out nice for a fraction of the price. Mission Complete!

I hope you enjoyed this project. It is one step closer for me to finally completely my living room.

Thanks, Carmody
