Rope Clutch Handbag

Hi Friends!

Welcome to July’s Home Depot Gift Challenge. If you’re new around here, the *HDGC is a monthly challenge that a group of creative bloggers take on. Here are my projects so far… copper tee handle, industrial pipe 2 x4 shelf, and concrete feather sculptures.

Each month a specific item is chosen from Home Depot, and we all come up with a DIY gift for a chosen recipient. The assigned material for July is natural rope. My task was to create a gift for a BFF using natural rope.

I am a fan of using rope in home decor, accessories and just about anything.

So, I created a rope clutch handbag perfect for summer and for any BFF.

DIY Rope Clutch by Paper and Fox

I started with natural rope.

Natural Rope

Natural rope is stiff and itchy so I boiled it for a couple of hours in attempt to make it softer. It worked a little- but it could have used a few more hours of boiling. FYI- It makes your house smell weird.

Boiling Rope

After the rope was done boiling ,I dyed the rope teal.

After a couple hours I removed the rope from the dye bath and allowed it to dry in the sun.

Using a old frame, I created a DIY weaving loom. Do you remember making those pot holders in school? I attached strands of teal rope to the loom initially with hot-glue, and later reinforced the strands with nails.

Using clothesline and mason twine I started weaving the rope.

I alternated colors of teal natural rope, white clothesline and hot pink mason twine.

I folded the woven rope to create a clutch handbag. I attached the sides with embroidery thread.

Thanks so much Amanda. Next time, I would boil it a couple additional hours to make it even softer.
