Porch Chalkboard Wall

Hi Friends!

It has been a busy week here at the Paper Planes NYC house. We have been preparing for our youngest son’s, Bryce, second birthday. Bryce is creative and loves to draw. I was inspired by the Outdoor Chalkboard that Tiny Sidekick created a few months back. Bryce has been using chalk to make his mark (on furniture, paintings, and walls) for a while now.

We decided to create Bryce his own chalkboard wall on our porch for his 2nd Birthday. Bryce would have an appropriate place to draw whatever he wants.

Materials Used

drywall

Being a household that is always working on projects, we happen to have a sheet of drywall on hand. We trimmed the drywall to our desired size using a utility knife.

Then we primed the drywall board and allowed it to dry. Using a paint roller, we applied two coats of chalkboard paint to the board. The reason for choosing a paint roller instead of a paint brush was to achieve a smoother finish.

We also spray-painted he framing wood gray.

Installing a chalkboard

Using L-Brackets we attached the standard plank to the brick porch wall. Then we drilled the painted drywall directly into the wall. We then framed the remaining edges with the painted corner trim.

The wood plank at the bottom of the chalkboard is a perfect ledge for chalk, erasers and sippy cups.

Needless to say, the porch chalkboard was a giant hit. He has already created many masterpieces. His friends thought it was pretty awesome too. I can’t wait to whip up some sugar chalk for Bryce to color with.

I am a big fan of simple learning toys and who doesn’t love a chalkboard. It will be probably a year before we need to raise the chalkboard to accommodate Bryce’s height. I would say that if you need to provide a gift to a child 3 and under, you can’t go wrong with a chalkboard.

I hope that you enjoyed this project.

Thanks, Carmody

What a really neat idea! I’ve seen chalkboard everything, but never a porch wall. And what a cutie pie!

Great idea! Especially if you have a big porch! This is perfect for nice hot days since it’s covered and shaded, but the kids still get to be outside! Love it. We’d love for you to link up to our party Motivational Monday!:) http://www.dwellinginhappiness.com/motivational-monday-2/
