Pop-Top Cookie Gift Packaging

I will be the first to admit that I am not a skilled cook. When it comes to holiday parties or fancy meals I am rarely delegated the task of preparing a main course dish. If I am the host, I will likely outsource the essential dishes to a local caterer or restaurant. However, I am good at presentation. I have seen various examples of the pop-top gift packaging and thought I would take a spin at it. My son, Knox, and I decided to prepare Chocolate Oatmeal Drop cookies for a holiday party. I can follow a recipe, especially when it comes to sweets. Since, the cookies were made out of oatmeal, it seemed reasonable to use the oatmeal container to house the cookies. ( See recipe below.)

After the after the cookies were prepared and cooled, I started on the packaging. First, I cut out the bottom of the empty oatmeal container with an x-acto knife. I filled the container with cookies (remember to place the cookies face down). I reattached the bottom of the oatmeal container with my hot-glue gun. Then I painted the sides, top and bottom with white craft paint. I located and printed a black and white photograph of Knox and me preparing cookies. I used a crayon to add a little color to the photo. With Modpodge and a paint brush, I attached the photo/label to the oatmeal container. I added ribbon around the edges of the container to create a more polished look. The cookies were safely sealed and easy to transport. Also, because they are sealed, my family could eat them before the event. Party-goers were able to pop open the lid and enjoy the cookies. Hopefully, they were so distracted by the cute presentation they didn’t notice that all we brought was cookies.

Oatmeal Drop Cookie Recipe

2 cups sugar

4 tablespoons cocoa

1 stick butter

½ cup milk

1 cup peanut butter

1 tablespoon vanilla

3 cups oatmeal

Waxed paper

In a large saucepan bring the sugar, cocoa, butter and milk to a boil. Let boil 1 minute then add peanut butter, vanilla and oatmeal. Mix. Then on waxed paper drop the mixture by teaspoonfuls. Let them cool and enjoy.
