Hi Friends,
I have just completed one of the easiest and instantly gratifying projects. A few years ago we were gifted a cute “new to us” patio sectional sofa. After almost 6 years of use, it was looking dingy and tired. Each spring I clean, scrub and do my best to give life to the cushions that have become pretty ugly. In our new home we have separated the sectional into two separate sofas for each our porches. I have been itching to update the patio cushions on our bedroom porch, but did not want to spend the money on fabric for re-upholstering. So, I decided to conduct an experiment and try painting fabric furniture cushions .
Painting Fabric Furniture - The experiment
The cushions have stains and discoloration from use and weather.
Yucky.
I could have used fabric spray paint or fabric medium to add to my paint, but I didn’t. This project will be a complete experiment and the worse that could happen is that I will have to recover the cushions with fabric. Using interior latex paint (that I already had from another project) I started my experiment. With a wet rag, I dampened the cushion fabric and applied paint with a paint brush. When the fabric is slightly wet, the fibers will absorb the pigment of the paint. I put on an audio book and started painting the patio cushions.
I love the results. It is not going to win an award for the softest patio cushion, but it looks great. It feels like painted canvas and has been easy to spot clean. I will keep you posted with how it upholds in the weather.
Now, I can relax and enjoy the view… for a few seconds at least.
XOXO Carmody
Love it
So is it comfortable or is the fabric stuff and scratchy?
What color did you use? I love it! I think if you had used a medium mixed into your paint, it would’ve come out softer. You can try sanding it softly. Great job!
I used “Smokey Slate” by Behr….it is one of my favorites.
I only use Behr paint…love it!
How fun! I have an old cozy chair and ottoman I want to do this to so they can go out on our upstairs master deck. How did they do through the different weather? Great job!
it’s been a year and a half. how is this holding up? Looking to do it if it’s getting along well!
I’m curios as well to the state they are in now.?
Thanks for the idea I’m going to have to try it
Also following!!! How is it holding up??
