Nautical Inspired Plumbing Pipe Shelf - Industrial Decor

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to another addition of the Home Depot Gift Challenge. Our challenge this month was to use a 2 x 4 wood board and create a housewarming gift for a new homeowner.

I love industrial inspired home decor and have been itching to create something with pipes. For my Home Depot project this month I created this nautical inspired plumbing pipe shelf. To make this gift special I added the coordinates of the homeowner’s new city. Sweet huh?

supplies for plumbing pipe shelf

Here is what you need to build the plumbing pipe shelf

2 x 4 - cut whatever size you need. I actually purchased a new 2 x 4, but located these pieces in the pits of my garage and liked the aging look of them.

4 - Floor Flange, Black, 1/2-Inch

2 - 90 Degree Elbow, 1/2- Inch

2-1/2-Inch by 3-Inch Nipple

2-1/2-Inch by 2-Inch Nipple

8- wood screws

Paint and Water to create paint wash

White Paint Pen

Drill

The first step was to attach the plumbing elbows to the nipples and then to the floor flanges.

paint wash on boards

Then, I painted the boards with a white/blue wash to give a drift wood look. I used house paint and water to create this wash.

Once the 2×4 boards were dry, I attached the plumbing pipes. They look like little handles. I placed one flange in between the two boards. This is an easy way to connect the boards and give the shelf depth. With a drill attach the handles/flange to the boards. The other end of the flanges will be attached to the wall. The pipes are somewhat heavy, so it would be ideal to attach the shelf to a wall on a stud.

latitude longitude charleston

Here is where a cool shelf turns into a sweet gift. Google the latitude and longitude of the location that you want to use. I used the coordinates for Charleston, South Carolina. I stenciled the coordinates onto the wood with a paint pen. After the paint dried, I lightly sanded the coordinates to give it an aged appearance.

I think that this would be a cool gift for a young homeowners. The shelf would work well inside or outside the home.

Now it is my pleasure to introduce the other Home Depot Gift Challenge Projects this month.
