17 DIY Halloween Costumes

Hi Friends!

I know that it is a little bit early, but I am already excited about Halloween and costumes. I mentioned in my 1990’s party post that my husband, David, and I are not afraid of dressing up in crazy costume for any occasion. It is almost like a contest between us, who can come up with the most creative get-up.

Are you ready to see my Halloween costumes from last year and many years before?

17 DIY Halloween Costumes

1. Frida Kahlo

Frida Khalo costume

Last year I was the creative and interesting Frida Kahlo.

The unibrow , flowers in air and dramatic earrings are key for this costume.

2. Robot

robot and storm trooper

David was a Robot and Knox a Storm Trooper. The robot was made with aluminum foil that was applied to cardboard boxes with spray adhesive.

The robot head is a piece of an air duct and the arms are dryer hoses.

halloween family

Here we are all together at our neighborhood Halloween Parade. Bryce was a Bee. I picked his costume up at a thrift store.

3. Unicorn

4. Slim Goodbody

unicorn and mr. goodbody

One year I went as a unicorn (most comfortable costume ever) and David as Slim Goodbody.

Unicorn was just a velour tracksuit, with a diy felt rainbow and felt hair. I used a paper cone to act as my horn.

For Mr. Goodbody, we painted organs on an unitard.

5. Retro Basketball Player

basketball star

When Knox was two we dressed him up at a retro basketball player. I loved this costume. I picked up the tank and shorts at a store.

We used acrylic paint to create the “Knox Stars” uniform design. I ordered the socks, sweat bands and basketball from Amazon.

This was a perfect toddler costume because he did not know he was in costume.

6. Officer Jon Baker

7. Gold Digger

Gold

I was the Gold Digger in year, David was Officer Jon Baker from Chips. I really just wanted to wear this wig.

gold digger

I wore a gold dress and spray painted tools, sand toys and a tool belt gold. Then I put on every gold accessory that I could get my hands on.

8. 50’s Housewife

50's Housewife

I have been a 50’s Housewife. This was just a retro dress, apron, pin curls, pearls, red lipstick and heels.

Really easy.

Housewife reading

The 50’s Housewife was actually a theme Bridal Shower that I hosted. I was pregnant with Bryce and scored this polk-a-dot maternity dress.

9. Cupcake

cupcake

I was a cupcake a few years back.

I made the bottom out of a laundry basket and added suspenders to the top of the basket to make it wearable.

I folded paper and attached the paper to the laundry basket with hot glue.

The icing is pieces of felt sewed on a t-shirt. I wish I had a better photo of this one.

I made a cherry out of a styrofoam ball and glued it to a headband.

10. Juno

11. Paulie Bleeker (Juno’s boyfriend)

Juno

I was lucky enough that my first pregnancy was right after Juno was released.

12. 80’s Prom Queen

13. That Dude that makes you feel uncomfortable

Prom

This wasn’t technically Halloween, but a NYE Prom Themed costume Party.

I found that lovely dress for $8 at a thrift store. I am not sure what inspired David’s look. I sent him to pick up a retro tux and he came out with this.

Can you believe that I did not win prom queen that night?….totally robbed.

14. Colonel Sanders

wonder woman and colonel sanders

Colonel Sanders and Wonder Woman

For Colonel Sanders, David scored this awesome suit at a thrift store around the previous Christmas.

A white wig, facial hair, bow-tie and the bucket full of biscuits completed the look. This is still one of my favorites of all his costumes.

My Wonder Woman costume was actually store-bought and I wish I still has it. I ripped the back of it with trying to do a somersault into my invisible plain.

(Don’s ask,.. it was pre-kids.)

15. Disco

Disco Couple

David put that white Colonel Sanders suit to use again with this disco suit. I scored my gold lamé jumpsuit at a vintage store.

I love, love, love, this jumpsuit and am looking for another excuse to wear it.

16. Paper Doll

17. Crown Royal

Paper Doll and Crown Royal

Paper Doll and Crown Royal

A really fun costume was being a paper doll. I created the entire outfit out of foam board. I traced a dress that I already had. Then I painted the dress red and black.

I used velcro to attach it to my clothes. You can’t see it in this photo, but I had a purse and shoes that all made with foam board. The only downside is that I could not sit down.

David was Crown Royal. He purchased a purple dress from Marshall’s. We embroidered the words “Crown Royal” on the top with gold cording .

You can’t see the bottom, but in cinched in the dress at the bottom to resemble a crown royal bag. He wore gold tights under the dress. Needless to say he was a hit at Halloween parties.

I hope that sparked your creative juices going. Seeing all these costumes makes me love my husband even more. If you can’t love a man in a unitard then who can you love?

What great roundup of costumes. I miss the days when everyone made their own costumes. As a society, we need to stop buying everything and go back to making things for ourselves. Home decor, food AND Halloween costumes.

Lol. That David is a keeper and he was upstaging you especially in the crown royal outfit.
