Allegedly, ancient civilizations in Babylonia used vinegar as a cleaning agent. Vinegar is natural, inexpensive and probably already taking up space in your cabinet. I am not going to pretend that I am one of those “I always use healthy and green products” type of people, because that would be a lie. I have been known to marinate a bathroom in bleach, but I am trying to change my ways. For one, I have become very sensitive to the fragrances and harsh ingredients in normal store bought cleaners. The chemicals irritate my skin and cause my eyes water. Strong household cleaners are not benefiting any member of my family including our dog, Putney.
So, I first tried just a straight vinegar and water mixture, but the smell was too pungent. Next, I collected tangerine peels from my preschooler’s snacks. I am sure you can use any kind of citrus peels. Tangerines were on sale at my grocery store.
Here is what you do-
Tear the peels into medium sized pieces and place in a in ja. Fill the rest of the jar with vinegar. (I used the peels from two tangerines per mason jar). Set the concoction away in a back of a cabinet for a two weeks.
Once the concoction is ready, strain the fermented tangerine peels from the liquid. Pour the tangerine cleaner into a spray bottle. Fill the rest of the spray bottle with water. It is complete.
My conclusion- I love this cleaning product. I have used it on just about everything including counter tops, sinks, bathtubs, marble, tile and hardwoods. It really works with cleaning highchair trays. The scent is very light with a hit of tangerine. I have no plan on going back to store bought cleaners.
The homemade cleaner would also make a nice gift for teacher, hostess, or just a friend if packaged in a decorated or personalized spray bottle.
That’s quite a nice idea! Recently I prefer I’m trying to clean my home from all kinds of chemical-based cleaning products and most of the cleaning solutions I mix by myself. The results are great and the whole house is so fresh. I have a similar recipe like the one you’ve given and definitely will try yours. thank you for sharing it!
Let me now how it works for you Linda.
